For the first time in more than a decade, the
Washington – President Barack Obama is set to announce this December during the climate meetings in Copenhagen that the U.S. will cut production of climate-changing gasses by 17% below 2005 levels by 2020, and 85% by 2050, says White House officials.
“The figures reflect targets specified by legislation that passed in the House but is stalled in the Senate,” according to the New York Times.
But “By making the pledge in an international forum, Obama is laying a bet that Congress will complete action on a climate bill next year and will be prepared to ratify an international agreement based on the commitment.”
