It was some minutes before 1 in the morning of January 10 when I was in Chowking at the corner of T.M. Kalaw Street and United Nations Avenue in Manila. I ordered one of their P49 ($1+) Value Kings – Chicken Chorizo Chao Fan and iced tea. I was sleepy but was forcing my bioclock to adjust to macho dancer hours, just like the good ol’ days, for my coming graveyard sked shift in my call center job. I was alone, as in alone in the entire restaurant aside from the crews. Then Sarah McLachlan’s Angel, theme from City of Angels with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan, played, cleansing the ambience, blessing it and everything in it with its achingly beautiful haunting melody.
