A profound change came upon my attitude in life – and by extension, my destiny – when I first ran across the “Serenity Prayer” traditionally attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: “Lord, grant me the courage to change the things I can, the patience to accept the things I can not, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
I can achieve my dreams if I invest discipline and perseverance, but I can’t graduate from Harvard today at 3:00 PM. The difference is clear.
Most things, alas, are not. That is why need wisdom.
“Wisdom is good,” some might say, “but we need cash.”
So okay – wisdom and cash.
That much is clear.
