February 20, 2016 Edition
The mother of a friend of mine suffered a stroke last night.
She is now still at the intensive care unit.
"That is the worst feeling in
the world," I said to him earlier. "When you see someone you love
suffer, and you can't do anything about it. You feel so helpless."
That is my worst nightmare. My
parents, my grandmother, my foster father, my first best friend and childhood
buddy, my second best friend, they all died in a hospital.
Personally, I'm not afraid of
death. I just don't want a slow and agonizing end. I would rather die than
suffer. It sounds cool to leave this life in a blaze of glory. But I what I
want is to die in the same way that I try to live my life: with peace and inner
strength.
In the end, we really don't know what
will happen or what we are going to do. It calls to mind the song "No Day
But Today" from Rent, one of my all-time favorite movies.
"Will I lose my dignity? Will
someone care...?"
