Line To Heaven: Healing From John Edward

Huggybear's Stories
October 25-31 Edition

Line To Heaven 1

Anthony Vanaria felt guilty about his father’s death. He was a medical emergency instructor for the New York City Fire Dept., but he can’t even save his own father from a fatal heart attack.

But that same night, he had a dream so vivid he’d remember it throughout his life. In the kitchen, his father and his uncle, who died the year before, were playing cards.

“It’s really nice,” his father said when Anthony asked how he was. “You’ll find out someday.” Then his father and his uncle went inside a door that wasn’t there and Anthony woke up.

Wishful thinking? But shortly, when his mother told him she can’t find the insurance policy, his father appeared again in his dream. It’s in a strongbox in the attic, said the fantasy. The next day, Anthony found it, just where his father said it would be.

Six years later, Anthony was facing the most agonizing of human dilemmas: his mother had been in a vegetative state for months, and it was up to him to take away the life support. Painfully, he made the decision and he let her go. “I walked around with the worst grief I could ever imagine,” he recalls. “I felt like I couldn’t save my father’s life and that I had killed my mother.”

His guilt drove him to desperation. Finally, he couldn’t stand it any longer, and he went to the medium Johnny Edward. As he and his wife walked up to the front door, a car pulled out of the driveway with the license tag 222 – the same number her mother, born February 22, kept showing her after she died. A feeling of being “overjoyed” swept over him as they entered.

“I felt like I was attending a reunion.”

Anthony’s parents came through Johnny, assuring him that they continue to love him, joking about the hidden tattoo he got in their memory, and sending their love to their grandson Anthony III. The baby is due for months yet, and they haven’t told anybody that if it’s a boy, they’d name him in honor of Anthony’s father.

“She says she knows you did all you could for her,” relays Johnny, and Anthony started to cry. “Her brain was gone and she thanks you for what you did; it was the right thing.”

An unanswered question was tugging at Anthony. During his wedding reception, as he led his mother for the traditional mom-son dance, expecting ‘Mr. Wonderful,’ the song she chose, the DJ instead played “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler – the favorite song of his parents.  He became upset and later scolded the DJ who said, “A man came up to me and said that’s the song you wanted.” They searched for the man but there was no trace of him; the DJ described the mystery requester, and it fit Anthony’s father perfectly.

Now Anthony asked his father, through Johnny, if that was him. Yes, came the answer. But, he insisted, is it that particular song? But that was all his father said about it.  Later, in the car, Anthony felt a sense of comfort and his parents’ loving presence. As he started to drive, he turned on the radio, what came on was ‘Wind Beneath My Wings.’

Anthony and his wife started to cry, and he had to pull over. “I looked up in the sky,” he recalls, “and thanked God and my parents for the beautiful gift they gave me.”

Sorcery has seemed to touch my life in the last few weeks. I'm going through events with a sense of the inexplicable yet inevitable, all shrouded in mists that cloud men's minds.

Why Leave The One You Love?

Text to someone whose wife is leaving

She is going across the seas to a far-away city to start a business while you're here working. It sounds like a smart and practical move.

But you also mentioned that she doesn't have any extra money for capital. She'll be living entirely on your salary like a pensioner, waiting to save enough for even a small venture. That could take months.

I sort of admire you for your loyalty for letting her take your ATM card and you'll be the one who'll be dependent on her. I try to understand where you are both coming from.

But I don't get it. Why the rush? Why can't she wait for the savings before she leaves? If you both want to save, you two can do it even without separating. Two can live as one, goes the old saw, and that's true. You said you'll both live frugally when she goes. That may be so, but it also means that your expenses will now need to cover rent for two houses and two individual lifestyles. You're like a divorcee paying alimony.

Or perhaps there are undercurrents of discontent? I mean not just on her part because she wants to leave, but also from your subconscious because you happily agreed? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by conflicting emotions? Is it like having too much too soon?

"There's a danger in loving somebody too much," goes a song which comes to mind.

I'm really old-school when it comes to romance. Maybe I'm idealizing things, but I think a loving and loyal partner would rather be with you no matter what hardships may come. The important thing is that you're together. A partner worth fighting for will never leave on such flimsy reasons.

Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough

"There's a danger in loving somebody too much
and it's sad that you know it's your heart you can't trust,
there's a reason why people won't stay where they are..."

I see most events as incidents in the larger scheme of things.

I've always had a sense of history. I have this fascination with people who had changed the lives of millions, like Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.  My next magazine articles will be different. I intend to focus now on history.

I'm going to craft a series timeless sketches of some of the country's most significant figures, like I did with Cory Aquino, Ramon Magsaysay and Ramon AvanceƱa. I'll go beyond borders of course, like I did with my stories on Albert Einstein, Shirley MacLaine and Richard Feynman. I'm inspired by the articles in vintage Reader's Digest magazines. My life has been enriched by those stories about Winston Churchill, Dwight Eisonhower, George Marshall, Ted Williams and Charles Lindbergh, to name some that stand out from my memory.

I'm going to write more stories that will inspire and give a sense of renewed purpose like Og Mandino, just like I did with my articles on Paulo Coehlo, Norman Vincent Peale and, of course, Og Mandino. A lot of my coming articles will be on self-motivation and maximizing one's full potential, like the ones I have about Wayne Dyer, Jack Canfield and Robert Kiyosaki. This means bringing out the best in me to walk the talk.

I'm not reinventing myself as a public speaker although the person I have in mind is Tony Robbins, whom I've also written about and consider as one of my role models. One of the greatest lessons I've learned from him is to take someone who has the kind of success that you want and just do what he did so you will achieve it too.

When Life Becomes A Metaphor

Huggybear's Stories
October 4-10 Edition

July 19, 2014
Saturday

Nature can be a metaphor for the heart.  The breeze of change is like the aroma of sea as you stand on the shore.

The sun has found paradise in the heavens, but he is set to go away again. Madrigals are soon to be sung in this advent of spring. But will the night be the same again for the stars?

Deep inside the planet, molten rock yearns to find release, to express the mounting pressure from the tectonic shifts within. The mounting heat at the core is steadily melting the surface, weakening the force that keeps it inside.

Clouds that serenely pass by like ghostly ancient galleons on a quest for fabled treasure in a mysterious island beyond the uncharted seas at the edge of the world.

Swift flight is how the bird learns the higher meaning of life. Now his wings are ready to fly without him. He has tasted the sweetness of the sky. Will he be the same as he returns to the ground, standing over the dust from which he came?

Thursday

There are more complicated things happening outside my own little world.

Broadcasting live this morning is the Senate hearing on the Disbursement Acceleration Program, the government's budget transfer scheme ruled by the Supreme Court last week as unconstitutional. Philippine President Noynoy Aquino, who will deliver his State of the Nation Address next week, spoke on national TV live last week and I like the way he elegantly defended the DAP and defied the High Court without sparking a constitutional crisis between two co-equal branches of government.

A Malaysian airline has been shot down in Ukraine last week; the families of the victims are afraid to go to there to identify the bodies because they might be killed too. Death can happen in a blink of an eye, like when another passenger airline crashed in Taiwan a few days ago.

I've never been afraid of death and I would rather be blown away than spend my last days suffering from some stupid disease. This made me think just how people fervently cling to life, unable to bear even the mere thought of losing it or what might possibly happen when they do.

There is another Malaysian Airline plane that hit the news in recent months: it just vanished from the radar screens as if pulled into the vortex of a different dimension.

I've just received another "Outstanding" award last week at the company where I work. But at the same time, I've been feeling burnt out from the night shift, the pressures from the work itself and the recent series of stupid rules and downright dumb spiels those bureaucratic morons in management keep coming out with. No matter how qualified they are, some people just don't deserve their rank. Those in positions of authority who make things harder for other people to do their work effectively simply don't deserve to be where they are.
