The Cathedral of Monte Cristo
Episode 23

Daddy Groovy got up and went to a table with a thermos and some little jars. "I have an assignment for you, Lea," he said, getting two styro cups from a drawer. "It's very dangerous, so I'll understand if you say no. Coffee?"

"Sure, Chief."

"I knew you wouldn't let me down," he beamed, pouring hot water. "Oy, I heard our competition has been trying to pirate you. But of course, you'll stay with us, right? Sugar?"

"Yes, Chief."

"Good, good, I admire loyalty, it's even more rare than honesty," said Daddy Groovy, bringing over the cups. "Okay Lea, let's talk about vampires."

Everything that happens to us is the result of what we have thought and done. I am going out of my way to make up for karma.

The tremendous amount of goodwill from the powers of the universe fills me with gratitude. I got more that I thought I ever would.

Thanks to You

The Cathedral of Monte Cristo

Episode 22

“I was talking to Amor yesterday,” said Fidelity. “You know, the Gonorrhea Goddess? She said she can get me in a club in Pasay. Trouble is, the owner is a sadist. Sounds interesting.”

“Wait a minute,” said Sharona. “I thought you have a sugar-daddy from Customs.”

“Oh you mean the Queen of Plaza Miranda?” asked Fidelity seraphically. “Turns out that he prefers boys.”

“Then pimp Chico!”

“Young boys, my Virgin Diva. And in case you didn’t know: Chico, or should I say, The Hold-Upper for All Seasons, is now working for the cops.”

“Honest?”

“Just the usual kind.”

“He’s a police asset?”

“More like a liability.”

The Cathedral of Monte Cristo
Episode 21

The public speakers in Rajah Solaiman Plaza were playing High by The Speaks. Sharona was strolling. It was nearly midnight but she still hasn’t hooked a customer yet.

Things were better in Isetann Recto Mall earlier. So what if the DOM looked like he escaped from a morgue? Money is atill money – even if she felt like a mortician. She recognized the girl who was buying a cigarette.

“Hi, Fidelity!”

“Hi!” said Fidelity, lighting a Philip.

“Girl, you’re a millionaire!” exclaimed. Sharona. “Buy me a cigarette, hoy!”

“If you only knew how penniless I am,” moaned Fidelity. “I am the Destitute Diva.”

“You break my heart you cheap cunt.” Sharona turned to the vendor. “Give me Hope, Joanna.”

I have seen for myself, since I began my quest for spiritual enlightenment, that our lives are governed by the Law of Attraction.

I make it a point to project good thoughts about my fellowmen, and lo and behold, decent people would come and touch my life.

The Fugitive

The Cathedral of Monte Cristo
Episode 20

“I have a better idea. I’m Franco and you’re Ernesto, so we’re frank and earnest, right? I’ll level with you. I have a map of this buried treasure– ”

BURIED TREASURE?!”

Everyone looked at them.

Franco pointed at the traffic jam outside. “You see those jeep passengers? They still haven’t heard you.”

“Oh, give me a break.”

“I’ll break your bones if you don’t pipe down,” said Franco. “Listen, I figure we’ll need at least ten thousand pesos. I only have six thousand. I need to get the treasure so I can get my family and hide forever. Did you know that Paolo is now six years old?”

“I know this guy who buys cellphones and credit cards,” said Ernesto. “I’ll give you three days to get it together.” He signaled to the waiter.

The waiter appeared.

“Another order of noodles,” said Franco.

“What are you doing?” hissed Ernesto when the waiter had gone.

“I’m still hungry!”

“You’re not even supposed to be in public!” said Ernesto. “You’re a fugitive, remember?”

“That’s why I need my strength.”

“By the way,” said Ernesto, “Where did you get the six thousand?”

Franco looked at him innocently.

“From the warden.”

The Cathedral of Monte Cristo

Episode 19

Franco and Ernesto were in a dim short-order restaurant in Arranque sharing a plate of bihon noodles. The radio was playing "The Day You Said Good Night" by Hale.

“The jailbreak is all over the news,” warned Ernesto.

“Relax,” assured Franco. “I have a gun.”

“Where –”

“From the warden.”

“Look, you should lie low for a while,” said Ernesto. “There’s this guy I know, he can get you a job in this new adventure camp in the mouth of Mayon Volcano. Tourists flock there to go bungee-jumping into the lava. They probably need instructors.”
