A Thousand Summers

Episode 11

I took a roll-on, roll-off (RORO) bus. I would have gone to the station in Cubao if only to reminisce my teenage hangout days at the Ali Mall, but it's only in Pasay where they have my route.

The Philippines is a mass of scattered islands so these busses would "roll-on" aboard ships and "roll-off" to disembark on the next pier. The advantages are obvious and the people who made it work should be given credit for it.

The greatest lesson I learned in riding the RORO is that I don't want to anymore. They don't follow their own schedule and I was stuck in a bad seat. Another thing: I was hostaged by greedy resto-owners during stop-overs. What's more, I wanted to stay longer in many of the places along the way.

I couldn't believe the stuff some people bring: there was even a big plastic chest of drawers on the aisle, trapping all of us inside.

My life is filled with everyday miracles. One of the most recent is that my neighbor across the garden had just turned off his radio and left, as I write this at half past nine in the morning. I'm now happily alone with blessed silence with only the melodies of bird songs on this beautiful morning.

A Thousand Summers 10

Then I went to Remedios in Manila for lunch, meeting up with another close friend from the 90s. He was looking for someone to help him with his new business.

So I called another friend, a former OFW with free time. I was overjoyed when they clicked instantly. They were celebrating their new-found friendship in the living room while I was in the kitchen, getting a glass of water.

I was also texting another friend. I told him I'll be at his house the following week. I have made up my mind. I already knew where was I going, where the next chapter of my life will begin. I will take the longer and much more exhilarating land-and-sea route. I began listing the people whom I'll give away my clothes, gym equipments and other stuff.

I always travel lightno excess baggage.

A friend was asking me earlier if I have children. I told him that my oldest son (one of those I'm sure is mine) is now 17 years old. He's in a different continent now with his mom who had married somebody else. I felt even more sentimental when I saw Jeric Raval, one of my favorite action stars when I was a teenager in the 90s, on "Tonight With Arnold Clavio" on GMA-7 together with the film legend Philip Salvador. Jeric is about my age and his kids are also teenagers now. Life is beautiful but it flies so fast. But it is still full of wonders.

A Thousand Summers 9

That morning after shift, I went to Makati to re-connect with a friend from way back in 1998. I was depressed and I needed a metaphorical breath of fresh air.

The Greenbelt and Glorietta areas are also full of happy memories for me. The most special place in Makati for me is the Ayala Triangle, the park behind the Stock Exchange.

People, local and foreign, look at me and see a guy in a shirt, jeans and rubber shoes; probably a student, writing in a notebook,  couple of books on top of his knapsack , with trinkets on both wrists like a hippie.

I look up and see trees of gold like the cherry blossoms in a Shinto shrine in Japan. The trees take me back to the sprawling U.P. Sunken Garden. What plays in my mind at those places is "I’ll Remember" by Madonna, theme from With Honors, one of my favorite movies, set in Harvard.

I won’t tell you why, only it’s about peeks at the bright sparks on the verities of existence, sheltered by the arms of nature, under an infinite sky that will outlast our sojourn through eclectic lifetimes.

I was treated at Starbucks yesterday. I wanted to treat another person so I made a bet with a friend that I'm sure I would lose. When somebody gives you something, you also give to others. You pay it forward.

Why The World Needs Heroes

Saturday Evening Posts
May 9-15 Edition

Sunday

I published today my sixth book, Why The World Needs Heroes, and shared on YouTube my short video The Sound of Life.

My latest book is a collection of inspirational, radical and paranormal essays I have written over the years. Here is an excerpt:

"I always remind myself that I'm a spiritual being having a physical existence, which I learned from Wayne Dyer, and not the other way around as I used to. I practice a form of Zen meditation called mindfulness, which I learned from Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh, where my senses are heightened as I focus and become fully aware of the present moment..."

My body is still tingling from yoga and my intensive work-out this morning. I had mango shake for breakfast. I'll go to the park later in the afternoon to read Stranger To The Ground by Richard Bach.

It is a sweet day and a beautiful life. This is a wonderful world and I am one with the universe.

Saturday

I'm now coming to the third month of my self-imposed vacation.  I've been very productive.

I published my fourth and fifth eBooks, A Celebration of Life and A Wonderful World. I'm going to publish my sixth tomorrow. I have also finished another major personal project.

My body is shaping up nicely with my daily work outs. When I publish this piece on my blog I will include my photo wearing a yellow sleeveless shirt taken today.  My blog is already set to publish my Saturday stories and Wednesday songs all the way to the first week of May. I have traveled and found my beach.

Above all this is the most sustained period of consistent positive vibrations I have ever experienced. This is one of the best times of my life and I'm enjoying every second of it.

"Please." goes the classic song, "don't let this feeling end..."

How A Bird Changed My Life 4

How A Bird Changed My Life 4

One of my most favorite scenes in the novel – and a constant source of personal inspiration – is when a young gull named Kirk Maynard prostrated himself in front of our hero because he wanted to fly but his wings are paralyzed.

“Help me,” he pleaded, “I want to fly more than anything else in the world.”

“Maynard Gull,” said Jonathan,  “you have the freedom to be yourself, your true self, here and now, and nothing can stand in your way.”

“Are you saying I can fly?” asked Maynard.  For the first time in a long time, he felt the stirrings of hope and redemption.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, his heart overflowing with love and understanding, said quietly, “I say that you are free.”

Bach tells what happened next:

“As simply and as quickly as that, Kirk Maynard Gull spread wings, effortlessly, and lifted into the dark night. The Flock was roused from sleep by his cry, as loud as he could scream it from 500 feet up: ‘I can fly! Listen! I can fly!’ ”

Three beautiful words:

I can fly!
